Virudhunagar is a major business town and
it is the capital of Virudhunagar District
located at a distance of 45 Kms South-West
of Madurai. This place was once referred to
as 'Virudhupatti'. In the beginning of 20th
century A.D., Virudhupatti was one among the
six important places of Ramanathapuram
District. Due to the rapid growth in the
field of Trade and Education, it was renamed
as 'Virudhunagar' on 29th October 1923. The
term 'Virudhu' means 'Award' in Tamil.
Virudhunagar exports all kinds of oil to
Dubai and Srilanka and also exports cotton,
chilli, spices, cardomom to USA and
Singapore. Virudhunagar is a famous business
centre without markets. Majority people of
the Virudhunagar belongs to Nadar community
and mostly they are business people. The
Business people of Virudhunagar play an
important role in price fixation of consumer
products. Hence there is a popular saying,
"Virudhunagar produces nothing but controls

Mariamman Temple is four hundred years
ancient and the yearly festival 'Panguni
Pongal' is very famous. Kousika
Mahanadi river flows through Virudhunagar.
This river originates from the Western
Ghats. Saint Kousikar is said to have
fetched water from this river for his Yaga.
Hence, it was given the name' Kousika
Mahanadi'. But the pity thing is years later
it was converted to drainage like Koovam
