Virudhunagar  achieves first place in Eye Donation in allover Tamil Nadu

Mahalir Aalosanai Maiyam - Women Councelling centtre

 

The "Mahalir Aalosanai Maiyam" which was created to assist the women in distress, started functioning from 10.9.2001 at Virudhunagar Collectorate, under the close supervision of District Collector.              

The formation of this centre is to give the practical implications to the stress emphasized by the Government on the Subject "Crime Against Women" and the subsequent instructions received from the Secretary to Government, Home Department, thereon.             

The Centre aims to help the women who are victims of dowry harassment, domestic violence by husband or his parents and those living in separation under various family problems.             

This centre functions in an informal way, exclusively with women members and Counsellors of the following Government and Non-Governmental Organizations.

 

 -  An assistant from the Revenue Department.

 -  A Representative from the Social Welfare Department.

 -  Sub-Inspector of Police from All Women Police Station.

 -  A Representative from the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation (Mahalir Thittam)

 -  An advocate.

 -  Two representatives or counsellors from N.G.Os.

 

Role of Police             

The Police Department plays a vital role in making the troubling male/husband and his parents responsible for the harassment of the women, to appear before the centre for counseling on the fixed days. The D.S.Ps attach prime importance to this item of work. The presence of the women police at the centre brings moral courage in the minds of the suppressed women to unfold her family problems freely.

Role of Revenue, Social Welfare and Mahalir Thittam Staff             

Revenue Assistant and Social Welfare Department staff who are accustomed in setting issues relating to public, Counsel both husband and wife, pin pointing their mistakes or bias thinking on both of the sides and make them realise their mistakes, which lead them to think of reuniting in the family.

Role of Advocate             

The women advocate explains the husband or his parents the ultimate legal action that may follow and the safeguards provided a women in the law, if he continues to harass his wife for dowry or ill treat her after drinking. This brings in a pressure in the mind of the male, who has so far neglected the advices of his elders, villagers or even his parents in some cases, and makes him bent upon the requests of his wife, and to abide by the laws.             

In cases on the threshold of separation, who are far beyond convincing persuasion and pressuring by the the centre, the advocate offers the valuable legal remedies, the women may seek and the avenues of the free legal aid awaiting for her.

Role of NGO nominated Counselors            

The trained counselors from local prominent NGOs play a very important role in the sensitization and counseling process. The time tested counseling concepts are applied at this centre for the benefit of women in distress.               

The Centre functions on all Mondays and Fridays from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM. A separate room has been provided near the Grievance Day petitions registration area, so that the public would be free to approach it  without hesitation and everyone coming to Collectorate may be well aware of its existence and functioning.             

The free service and the effective Counseling of the centre has received the overwhelming reception by most of the women in need, all over the District. Since its inception, 275 petitions have been received during the past on year, and the centre has so far reunited 53 estranged couples, besides giving valuable legal suggestions and awareness to the suffering women, who were hitherto left astray, without knowing the destiny of their walk of life.

Moon school concept is perceived from the cultural milieu of India.  Indian mothers feed their children showing the moon and telling tales.  Similarly, the village folk assemble among the river banks on full moon days and have supper in the moonlight.  There used to be a lot of fun and frolic.  Nilla palli is expected to generate same level of enthusiasm among the children and their parents.

Moon Schools bloom on full-moon days and serve as a platform for the children to exhibit their innate talents in front of their parents and other rural folk.  It serves as forum to talk about dropout and enrollment issues and to analyses  the pull and push factors, such as economic condition, quality of education, attitude of parents and tendency of factory managements etc.

NILA PALLI is Natural and interesting 3 to 4 hours event.

Moon Schools started in Virudhunagar District with an intention to bring about a change in people's perception about the education and elimination of Child labour from hazardous and non-hazardous occupations.  This community based activity is aimed to play a positive role in the eradication of child labour in Virudhunagar district

 

Arranged once in a month on Full-moon days, at 150 locations where special schools are located.

 

Arranged at open places in villages. 

 

Children's Rallies are organized as a part of social mobilization process. 

 

Songs and cultural programmes are organized. 

 

Joyful of learning methods are demonstrated.

 

Parents who have encouraged their children to study are honoured.

 

Games for children are organized and prizes are offered.

 

Book reading activities are demonstrated.

 

Suggestions and comments by parents, community support group are encouraged.

 

Employers' are sensitized on the problem of child labour.

 

Elected representatives, NGOs and officials participation is ensured for positive impact.

 

Various benefits under Government schemes are offered to the needy parents.
